Import skills you already have
The library is the only place skl use and skl sync read from. Skills in ~/.claude/skills, ~/.cursor/skills, or inside a project have to be imported first.
Import from home agent directories
To copy every skill from your home agent directories into the library, run:
skl init
skl init scans ~/.agents/skills, ~/.config/agents/skills, ~/.claude/skills, ~/.cursor/skills, ~/.codex/skills, and the home directory of every other agent skl knows. It copies each skill that is not already in the library. It leaves the source directories as they are and never overwrites a library skill. Run skl doctor to see which directories exist on this machine and how many skills each holds.
The first time you run skl init or skl doctor in a terminal, skl may ask once whether to add extras such as Claude Code. See Add an extra agent directory.
Capture a skill from a project
To copy a skill that lives inside a project into the library, run skl capture from the project root with the skill name or path:
skl capture writing-tests
skl capture .agents/skills/writing-tests
A name resolves under .agents/skills and under any extra agent directory, whether saved in your config or listed in the project's skills.toml. The source must be a directory that contains SKILL.md.
After the copy, skl adds the name to skills.toml and replaces the project directory with a symlink to the library copy. To leave the project directory as a real copy instead, pass --keep-copy:
skl capture writing-tests --keep-copy
If the library already has a skill with that name, capture fails. Pass --force to overwrite the library copy, or --as to store it under another name:
skl capture writing-tests --force
skl capture writing-tests --as writing-tests-v2
Pass --project <dir> to capture from a project other than the current directory.
Check the result
skl list
Every imported skill appears with its path under ~/.local/share/skl/skills. If you are logged in and auto-sync is on, the next command that syncs uploads the new skills. Run skl sync to upload them now.
